Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

The best learning comes from within. The best teachers are those who inspire and instill a desire to learn in their students. Motivation is the key. We must realize that no branch of knowledge is complete. Learning algebra and geometry in a vacuum may be fun, but how practical is it? Most students need to see and understand applications of this knowledge before they value it. It is the teacher's duty as a professional to help make explicit real-world connections that help students form meanings for what they are taught. With this in mind I used a variety of teaching techniques in this class to help students make connections not only within mathematics, but to help connect math and other subject areas and to real-life experiences. Learning is a life-long process for both students and teachers. You can lead a horse to the water but you cant make him or her drink - but you can immerse the horses head in the water for 50 minutes a day. And lastly, you cant make a pig into a racehorse but you can make a very fast pig.

Classroom mottos:
"Don't fight it! Write it!"
"Do it right; do it light. Do it wrong, do it long!"
"You can't spell "function" without first spelling "fun".
"Don't rush the monkey,and you'll see a better show."
"He who doth not tooteth own horn, doth not get horn tooteth". -ancient trumphet player's saying
"I think you're going to like this ..."
