Hello! My name is Tammy Portwood and I teach 8th grade Arts and Humanities on the 8th Grade Blue Team. I have been at SMS for the past 7 years, and this is my 13th year of teaching. Arts and Humanities is an awesome class to teach because my students are able to perform in many different ways. Throughout the schoolyear, we study dance, music, visual arts and drama. At the end of the year, we usually produce a fantastic play and perform it for the school, as well as the public. We always have a big crowd in attendance for our productions because the students work hard to make them spectacular!

Since coming to Southern Middle, I have also started the Speech and Drama team with the help of Miss Tamera Sparkman. Miss Sparkman and I have really enjoyed watching our team grow and improve with each passing year. Last year, our team ranked 4th place in the whole state. It was a very exciting moment for the team, as well as the coaches!

Currently, in Arts and Humanities, the students are creating their own original dances which reflect all of the core content they have learned in my class. Their dances will show the elements of dance, a purpose, a theme, and different kinds of movements they have studied. Soon, I will add some pictures of their performances to this page.

When we finish studying dance, we will learn all about writing our own music. The students will actually arrange their own songs. Next, we will study the elements and principles of visual arts and complete some really fun art projects to display. Finally, we will learn how to produce a play and all of the jobs associated theatre production. The ultimate culmination to all of our studies will be our play at the end of the year. It will involve all of the areas of performing arts, dance, music, visual arts and, of course, drama!
