Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year! I am excited to get to know you and your child this year. Please contact me if I can help in anyway. I am very happy to have the opportunity to teach your child math this year. It is going to be a fun filled year!
This is my 6th year teaching. I am lucky enough to have been at Southern Elementary teaching 5th grade math all six years. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics from Eastern Kentucky University. I received a Masters Degree in Instructional Leadership also from Eastern. I am very happy to say that I just finished my Rank I this summer in Reading/Writing Specialist from the University of the Cumberlands. I have been married for 3 years to my husband Scott.
We are finishing up working with multiples and factors. The week of Sept. 14th we will be working on prime and composite numbers.
What can I do at home to help my child in math?
*Memorize Multiplication facts (up to 12 x 12)
Please spend 10 minutes each night studying multiplication facts. Students are slowed downed tremendously when doing math problems when they dont know multiplication facts.
*Ask your child what they did in math class each day. Also, see if they can
show you what we did.
*Play puzzles and games that promote math learning like Tetris and Monopoly.
*Help with math problems by asking questions to clarify their thinking rather than just telling them how to solve a problem.
*Be more concerned with the process of doing math rather than just getting the
correct answer.
*Look for math examples when you are out having fun or running errands. Even during football, basketball, etc. games. (How many points have both teams scored altogether?)
* Most importantly, try to have a positive attitude about math around your child. If the see that you do not like math they will adopt that same attitude and stop trying.
