Hello! Welcome to our class website. My name is Mrs. Stephanie Foster and this is my third year at Burnside Elementary and my fifth year teaching. I have a wonderful group of students this year who love to learn. Our classroom is an exciting place to be. Here, the day is packed full of fun, hands-on learning.
Our school is a Reading First school. This program is designed to implement whole group instruction, small group instruction and literacy centers into the classroom every day. We start our reading block with whole group reading instruction. Students enjoy the many interactive lessons and games we do on the Promethean Board. Students then go to centers and small group instruction. Our reading centers focus on the 5 Components of Reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency, and Vocabulary. At these centers students participate in a variety of hands-on, engaging activities that help develop their reading skills. Small group instruction is individualized reading instruction based on student needs.
Our school uses the Everyday Math program. It is a hands-on approach to teaching math that allows students to have fun while still learning the necessary math skills for first grade. With this program students engage in many games that are instruction-based. Our math is also supplemented with the Success Maker Math computer program. Our class spends 20 minutes each day in the computer lab where each student has the opportunity to receive individualized math instruction, review and practice on essential math skills.
At Burnside our students enjoy learning and growing as individuals. BES is a great place to come to school and a great place to work!
Homework - Each week a homework packet will come home. This packet will have spelling and math work. These are skills that we are working on in the classroom. Please have your child complete the work over the course of the week and return it by Friday. Homework will be checked and students will receive a sticker on the homework chart.
