I am Mary Thompson, art teacher at Burnside and Woodstock schools. This is my 25th year of teaching. I taught English in middle and high school the first 7 years and have been teaching art the past 18 years. I feel that teaching is my calling in life and that teaching art is my blessing. Students need to know about art because everything they wear, sit on, ride in, eat off of, look at, or read has first been conceptualized by an artist. Whether the art is functional, decorative, or intellectual, it impacts their daily lives. We know past civilizations by their art. Also, furture civilizations will know us through our art. We are all connected, past and present and future, by what we create.
