"You don't get what you wish for; you get what you work for."
Northern Middle School

Hello!

I am Lachana Scholl and I teach 7th grade Language Arts on the Dragons and Bravehearts team. Many of you may know me from 6th grade Wizards Social Studies. I am so happy to have the opportunity to work with the same terrific students again this year! Each 7th grade student will be in my class at some point throughout the year. I will flip between teams each 9 week grading period. I started out on the Dragons team, so I will have Dragon students in class through September 30th, then I will become a Braveheart for the 3nd 9 week period. I will rotate like this between teams throughout the year. I will teach Persuasion the first term your student is in my class, then follow with Informational Reading and Writing thereafter. I will be adding some grammar lessons to the mix, as well.

***During our Persuasive Unit, students will be required to write a 5 paragraph Persuasive Paper. I ask that parents play an active role in going over the paper with their child at home to make it as convincing as possible. Students will be asked to complete an organizer as a pre-writing activity before writing their first draft. It will be the students' responsibility to turn the papers in on deadline dates. Also, toward the end of the 9 week period, students will be assigned activities that require magazines. This will go along with our study of propaganda. Students will be required to bring in one magazine. I'm not picky about the magazines being brought in as long as they are appropriate for 7th grade students, contain advertisements, and are not expected to be brought home.

I am a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College and live in Adair County. I am married with three very active boys. I coach Northern Middle School's Cheerleading Squad and recieve much joy from working with these girls. I am a very social person and I like to communicate with parents as much as possible. To ensure the success of my students, I may make phone calls home if I see the need arise. I also welcome phone calls and emails from parents at any time.

**Special Note to Parents and Students**
I believe in "do-overs!" If a student is struggling in my class, he/she has the opportunity to improve their scores. When a student is disappointed by a grade they have earned in my class, I will give them the chance to correct the assessment until they earn the grade that satisfies their goals. Research shows that allowing this procedure actually improves a student's learning process and ability to retain the material. With this in mind, no student should fail this class.

Message to Parents
Dear Parent:
The following information is provided so we can communicate as timely and effectively as possible during the school year. Your involvement in your childs education is important to your child and all the educational staff here at NMS. Please feel free to contact your childs teacher if a need or question arises.

Language Arts II is a supplemental English class that students will participate in every other 9 weeks. All students assigned to the Dragon team will be enrolled in this class only nine weeks out of each semester, totaling 18 weeks throughout the school year. When not enrolled in this course, your child will be enrolled in Mrs. Hutchinsons Math/Science course.

Best Contact Time
I welcome communication from parents at all time throughout the school year. The best time to contact me by telephone is during my planning period, 10:40 12:10. I may also be contacted through the email address below.

The following information is provided as a guide for much of what your child will experience and be expected to do in his/her academic growth during this nine week period. This is a guide and not intended to be all-inclusive. As we become more familiar with the abilities and needs of our students, some modifications in the following guide may be needed. Changes in the school calendar may also require modifications.

Objective or focus
Persuasive Reading/Writing: Students will become familiar with various forms of persuasion found in the media and in text.

Grammar/Mechanics: Students will extend grammar and writing skills.

Planned Projects
Students and parents will be notified of projects created to reinforce learning as they are planned.

Important Activities
Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts through real-life classroom activities. Learning checks/unit tests are conducted at the end of each unit.

Exams
Students will be notified of upcoming tests at least three days prior to test date. Students will be given study materials and a thorough class review. However, students are strongly encouraged to prepare for tests outside of class as well.

Rules & Special Instructions
My classroom rules are as follows:
1. Come prepared to class. This includes bringing a pencil to class!
2. Respect others and their belongings. Please keep hands to yourself.
3. Follow directions as they are given.
4. Keep voice appropriate to the activity.
5. Obey school rules.

Consequences for breaking the rules above are as follows:
1st offense: Warning
2nd Offence: Conference with Student and loss of Team Time
3rd Offence: Modified seating arrangement
4th Offense: Call to parents
5th Offense: Parent/Teacher Conference

Ideas for Parental Support:
*Talk to your child about assignments and upcoming quizzes or tests.
*Ask to see returned quizzes/assignments and be aware of your child's progress.
*Check agenda book daily for homework or class assignments.
*Contact teachers by phone or e-mail if you have any questions or concerns (phone number and e-mail address listed above). This is best to do in the middle of the 9 week period, rather than the end.
*Monitor your child's progress through Infinite Campus.
*Set high expectations for your child and expect great things from them.

Homework:
Students will be allotted time to complete assignments in class, however if more time is needed, the students will be required to complete the assignment at home. Assignments will be turned in when the class meets again. It is the student's responsibility to keep up with his/her work and turn it in.

Class Work :
Students are responsible for turning in work, on time, to the designated areas in the classroom.

During the grading term, extra items for the classroom are sometimes needed to assist students. If you can donate any of the following items, it would be greatly appreciated.

Classroom Needs
Each child is expected to come prepared to class with paper and a pencil. Each student will need to bring a 2 pocket folder to keep in the classroom. Their work will they taken up, graded, and given back to them via this folder.

On-line access to student gradesGrades are now being recorded on a new system, Infinite Campus. Parents will still be able to access student grades through the internet using this system. Please watch for information coming home soon to explain how to access your childs grades.
