WELCOME to our class webpage!

Hello! My name is Karla Johnson and this is my third year at Nancy Elementary. I served as the Math Coach my first year, but have taugh 5th grade math for the past 2 years. My husband, Shelby, and I have two children... Austin is 9 and Emma is 4. I graduated from Midway College with a B.A. in Elementary Education. I am currently pursuing my Master's in Elementary Education.
It is such an honor to work at a terrific school who focuses soley on the success of children. It is my duty as an educator to inspire my students to be the best they can be and grow up to be responsible citizens. It is a privilege to work with such a great group of students. I look forward to this school year and many more to come.

Q. What materials will my son or daughter need to have for Math class?
A. Materials Needed
  • Pencil and Paper (This is very important for Math class!)
  • Everyday Math Textbook
  • Single Subject Spiral Notebook
  • Math Tool Kits will remain in the classroom for students to use each day

Materials that the school will provide: graph/grid paper, calculators, protractors, manipulatives (base ten blocks, geoboards, counters, etc.) If you would like to purchase these things for your child to own, feel free to do so. Just keep in mind that we do provide these things for your child to use in the classroom.

*Your child will be assigned a calculator that they will use and be personally responsible for while in Math class. We will talk about taking care of the calculator in class. Please be sure to stress to your child that it is their responsibility to take care of their calculator.

Q. How will my child receive his or her grade?
A. Grading

Grades in Math will consist of four types of grades: Homework, Quizzes, Tests, and Projects. The following is an explanation of each type of grade:

Homework Grades will be taken a variety of ways. One way that homework grades are taken is based on completing the assignment. If the assignment is returned to school on time and complete then the students receives 100%. Percentage grades will be assigned to the students according to how much work they have completed on the assignment. For example, if a child only does half of that assignment, he or she would be given a 50%. Other homework grades will be taken from the correctness of the work. In this case, students will receive a percentage grade based on the number of correct responses given.

Quizzes are scored according to the number of correct answers given.

Tests are also scored according to the number of correct answers given. These test scores will count DOUBLE. That means that whatever a student scores on a test, the grade will be entered into the grade book twice. This is to give extra importance to a test. Tests will be assigned at the end of each unit or on occasions where I feel the students need to be assessed, but the students will always be informed ahead of time. By the time a student takes a test in Math class, they should be able to do all of the skills on that particular test; this is why the tests are weighted so heavily.

Projects may be assigned periodically throughout the school year. Students will receive a scoring guide for each project that lets them and you know how the projects will be graded. Unless otherwise noted, all projects will be one grade.

Q. What should I do if my child tells me that they are allowed to use calculators for their math assignments?
A. Believe them!

Calculators will not be used on ALL assignments. However, as the year progresses we will use calculators quite a bit. Papers that are allowed to have calculators used on them will be marked in some way so that you know for certain if calculators are okay to use. If you ever have questions about this, you may contact me at school or home.

Q. What can I do to help my child succeed in math class this year?
A. Ask your child about what we are doing in math class.
  • Go over math assignments with your child.
  • Read and use the unit newsletter from Everyday Math sent home to you. These newsletters contain explanations of the games we play in class as well as give specific examples of how to do the math we are currently learning. Important vocabulary words are given and explained as well.
  • Contact me as soon as possible if you have any questions or concerns about how your child is doing in math.
  • Share positive stories of how you personally use math in your life.
Q. I have heard that Everyday Math is very challenging to the students. Is this true?
A. Everyday Math is a Spiral Curriculum

This means that throughout each unit, different areas will be covered and intertwined. (For example, if we are doing a unit on fractions, there may also be a section of double-digit multiplication or division within the same unit.) The curriculum may seem difficult to the students at the time, but I will always do my best to help the students understand the content through the use of class discussions, examples given on the board, partner work, and use of manipulatives pertaining to the area we are working on at the time. Homework assignments will also be given to help reinforce the daily lessons and prepare the students for the next days lesson.

Q. What if I cant even explain to my child how to do their homework?
A. You are not alone!

A lot of parents have had a hard time explaining some math problems that their child brings home, but thats okay! I will send home informational tutorials that will walk you through each step if you would like these. Just let me know and I will send these tutorials home with your child. There is also an Everyday Math link on my school webpage that could help you with this. If you are still having trouble, you may call me at home.
