Hello everyone, my name is Kasey Compton. I am a Midway College graduate, finishing with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I recently finished my Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Lindsey Wilson College. This year I am teaching 2nd grade here at Burnside and I absolutely love it! My students are all wonderful and unique in their own way. This year we will be doing so many fun activities that your students will learn from and hopefully, always remember! Should you ever have any questions or need to speak to me for any reason, please don't hesitate to call me. I look forward to speaking with everyone!

This year, 2nd graders will be exposed to several different types of genres, parts of a story, reading strategies, and so much more.
Writing- We will be writing several pieces this year.
Spelling Words- Spelling words will be sent home every Monday on the Weekly Work Newsletter. Students will always have some type of spelling homework to practice their words. Each week, the spelling words go along with our story and our lessons. So your child gets lots of practice at school!
Unit Tests- Unit tests will be given about once every month. These test will consist of two stories with questions about each of the stories. They will also include grammar, high frequency words, and some vocabulary that students have learned during the month. We will always review for these tests, so there's no need to worry about your child's grades. If I think it will be beneficial to send something home to study, I will do that in plenty of time for you to help them study. The test willl also consist of the skills and strategies we learned throughout the month as well as literary elements from the story that we read.
Reading Goals- Each week, on the Weekly Work, there is a section where your child is required to read at least 15 minutes every night. Parents/Guaridians are asked to initial beside the day that their child reads. This helps to ensure that your child is getting the reading practice that they need to be successful. Later on in the year, students will recieve a reading goal ticket which they are to take home and fill out with a parent/guardian. They will have one month to complete thier goal. If it takes longer than one month, that is okay. Students will just keep the reading goal ticket until they have met their goal. Once their goal has been met, students will bring in the ticket and place it in a jar. Every month several lucky readers will have their ticket pulled from the jar and win a prize.
Open Responses- Open responses will be given either weekly/bi-weekly. They will assess students' knowlege in the content that we covered during the week. For the first few weeks, we will be answering these questions whole-group so that the students will have a very good understanding of how to correctly answer them. We will do open responses in class, but on occasion, if the students don't complete them I will be sending them home. If you have any questions about how to do these, please contact me.
Math- Any math home work that will be given will be attached to the Weekly Work.
PAR Words- I have sent home a blue list of words to all my students. Please practice these for one minute every night. Students should be able to read all words correctly in one minute.
