HELLO FROM MRS. COFFEY'S SECOND GRADE!
My name is Mrs. Coffey and I am glad that you decided to join us this year! This is my 14th year teaching in our district's primary program. One thing I've found during my tenure is that each year is like starting a new job all over again. However, by the end of the year you can really see how far your students have progressed .
We are realllllyyyyy working hard to learn all we need to know in order to give the third grade teachers a run for their money! Along with our "regular" cirriculumn, we recently adopted a "new and improved" math program, "EVERYDAY MATH". The students are very excited about this new math program. I hope you will enjoy spending quality "Math time" with your child as we all become more involved in this math program together. We also have a daily computer reading program called Breakthrough to Literacy. This program allows for each child to read on the computer and practice various reading concepts and skills along with their regular daily reading program.
Here's a little "run-down" of what's going on in our classroom each week. We have two Spelling tests weekly....a pretest on Wednesday and a final test on Friday. We also have a weekly Reading test each Thursday or Friday based on that week's reading story, which covers vocabulary, comprehension, and open response questions. Therefore, it is VERY important that you spend a few minutes to listen to your child read their story OUTLOUD to you and answer any questions you or they may have. Also, within our math program , we will be having a quiz during the week, plus an assessment at the end of each unit. Please encourage your child while at home to count money, tell time, add/subtract with regrouping, practice their multiplication / division facts, and use measurement to help them become a more successful student using their Everyday Math concepts.
