The Shopville Family Resource Centers mission is to create an environment that promotes learning through reducing barriers and enhancing a healthy environment for our children and families. All children enrolled in the school and their families can us the center and the services that are offered. The Shopville Family Resource Center is open Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 3:30pm. The center is also available during academy and summer breaks. Evening appointments are available upon request.
Services provided by the FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER:
Childcare:
A school-age childcare program is available at Shopville Elementary. The program is available from 3:30-5:30pm on days that school is in session. A registration packet is required before a studen can begin. There is a fee for this service.
Back-to-School Extravaganza:
The Pulaski Co. FRYSC host an annual event to distibute free school supplies to registered students in the county school system. Families also have the opportunity to receive information from a variety of community organizations and businesses. This event is held the week before the start of school. The Back-to-School Extravaganza is designed to hlep students be better prepared for school.
Clothing Closet:
The Family Resource Center has a clothing closet available to the students at Shopville Elem. in case of accidents during the school day. There are many other community agencies that provide clothing to families in need. Please contact the center for more information.
Resource Room/Lending Library:
The Shopville Family Resource Center has materials such as videos, books, and pamplets to help families deal with everyday issues that we face. Many of these are available for checkout so just stop by the FRC.
Character Education:
The Family Resource Center promotes the character education program at Shopville Elem. Each month a student from each homeroom is chosen as "Character Kid of the Month." These students are recongized at the month PTA meetings and enjoy Pizza with the Principal.
Parents As Teachers:
This is a program available to parent who are pregnant or who have children between the ages of 0-5. The goal is to provide parents with research-based information, guidance, and assistance in being successful as their child's best first teacher. The program helps bridge the gap between neuroscience and education to enhance parenting and improve outcomes for young children. To learn more or register for the program, call the FRC.
Homework Help:
After-school tutoring is available one-day a week through the Family Resource Center. The tutors are students from Pulaski Co. High School and are referred through the Youth Service Center. Students are referred to after-school tutoring through teachers and/or parents.
The school district also provides Extended School Services (ESS), in which teachers provide assistance for children before/after school and/or during academy weeks in small groups. Contact the school for more information on the extended school services.
Programs for Parents/Families:
We have several programs for parents throughout the year. Refreshments and childcare are available at times. Topics may include: Homework Help, Computer Class, ADHD, Paired Reading, Discipline, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group, etc.
School Programs:
The Family Resource Center sponsors many programs throughout the year for the students. Programs are educaional and/or prevention programs, such as: Red Ribbon Week, Dental Hygiene, School Bus Safety, Reading Awareness, Child Abuse, Nutrition, arts/humanities, character education, etc.
Referrals to Community Agencies:
Families often need additional assistance. The Family Resource Center will provide referrals to local community agencies to help meet the needs of our students and families. Referrals may be to mental health agencies for counseling and agencies for emergency assistance, such as food and utilities. Call the FRC for more information.
Kid's Day Out:
The Family Resource Center host a one day day Kid's Day Camp during the summer break. These are enrichment programs, which may include computers, arts/crafts, sports, etc. Permission slips will be sent home before each Kid's Day Camp and parents are responsible for transportation.
Family Involvement:
Children whose parents are involved in their education do better in school so the FRC promotes family involvement. In collaboration with the PTA, Family Fun Nights are hosted several times a year to give families the opportunity to come to school and spend quality time together.
Holiday Assistance:
The Pulaski Co. FRYSC sponsor the annual Guardian Angel Tree. This program helps families with Christmas gifts for their children. If you may need assistance or would like to sponsor a child, please call the FRC for more information.
The "Fued For Food" is also an annual event through the character education program. This is a district-wide event where students are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items to be donated to local agencies in the community. The Family Resource Center also makes Thanksgiving food baskets to give to families in need.
Small Group Counseling:
The FRC provides small group counseling for students in areas such as anger management, grief, social skills, and other areas of need. Please contact the center for more info.
6th Grade Transition:
The transition from elementary school into middle school is an important move for all of our students. The FRC collaborates with Northern Middle School to offer a one-day program during the summer to help with the transition and make it as successful and less stressful for the students as possible.
