Hi! My name is Denna Reynolds and I am new to Northern Middle School this year. I am the new Visual Arts teacher for the 8th grade. I am excited about starting the new school year and meeting my new 8th grade students.

There are many exciting things that the students will be completing in my classroom such as projects using the color wheet, 3D artwork such as a mask and a self portrait using the pointillism technique.

This year is going to be a great year for all of us!

Unit of Study: Life Drawings

Major Topics to be Covered:
Face & Body Proportion, Self Portraits, Continuous Contour Drawings, and Paper Mache Mask

Major Assignments or Projects:
We begin the nine weeks with a study of the human body and gesture drawings so that the students get a feel for the flow of human movement. We then will move on to continuous contour drawings that help the students to explore the proportion of the human body. After a study of proportion we begin to study self portraits and shading of the face. At the end of the 4 'bd weeks we will complete a mask self portrait using paper mache and paint.

Assessments and Quizzes:
Project Grades (continuous contour drawings, gesture drawings, self portraits and the paper mache masks), Quiz Grades, Exam Grades

Literacy Connections:
Understanding Art text book and related materials
Written critiques of various paintings

Ideas for Parental Support:
Encourage students to complete all assignments and hand them in (this is essential for a passing grade).
A good was to support your child is to ask questions about the activities that the students take part in during the day at school. You can also encourage your child to do their best by helping them with their homework and going over vocabulary words that will help them during their daily school activities. I also want to encourage you to contact me by phone or email if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

Grade Requirements and Homework Rules:
Hand in all assignments on the due date and any homework assigned on the next school day. Have all needed supplies (pencil, paper, etc.) and be ready to work when class begins. Keep work area clean and organized for part of the students grade.

Extra Classroom Information:
I will have each team (the Supernovas and the Navigators) for 4 'bd weeks of each grading period. Each student is expected to keep the Visual Arts room and their general work area clean and organized and keep all handouts and notes taken in a provided folder. This ensures that all students are able to achieve their artistic goals.
