Fifth Grade
Welcome to Mrs. Miller's Fifth Grade! This is my third year teaching 5th grade Social Studies at Southern Elementary and my eleventh year in the Pulaski County School District. I am very happy to be a member such a wonderful staff and school. My goal is for all students to perform to the best of their ability and to see learning as an enjoyable experience. I am very excited about the curriculum for fifth grade and the terrific things we will be exploring this year. We hope to expand our knowledge by doing a lot of hands-on activities, projects, field trips, and thematic units relating to our Social Studies curriculum. I am looking forward to 172 exciting days of preparing students to enter the middle school.
This year we will be developing and enhancing reading and writing skills through our social studies curriculum. We will be doing lots of hands on activities that correspond with our History Alive program. These activities will relate to all aspects of Social Studies - Geography, Historical Perspective, Economics, Government and Civics, and Cultures and Societies. We will be doing both in and out of class projects to enhance learning. This year we will also be doing a unit of study called "We the People". It is a study of the citizen and the constitution. We also hope to participate in a mock congressional hearing. We are anticipating a fabulous year!!
Students also keep a daily planner to communicate with parents on a nightly basis. We strongly encourage parents to check and sign this planner every day. This a fabulous way to keep up with what is going on with your child and an easy way to communicate with all the teachers.
Midterm reports will be sent home each nine weeks for the four grading periods. Grades will be based upon the following scale: 90-100 points A, 80-89 points B, 70-79 points C, 60-69 points D, and below 60 points will be a failing grade. Progress reports will then be sent home upon completion of the nine weeks! If you have any questions at anytime during the grading period, please feel free to call the school or send me an e-mail.
