Hello! My name is Beth Halcomb and this is my 13th year at the great Southern Middle School! I earned a Bacholar of Science degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Kentucky University, and I earned my Master's Degree in Middle Grade Education from EKU as well. I am currently completing my Rank I in Elementary Counseling. I live with my two children, Audrey (age 10) and Grant (age 7), and they really keep me busy! In my spare time I enjoy riding my horses or working with the 4-H Dog Program. I am currently teaching Language Arts on the 8th grade Blue team. They are a great group of folks to work with!

In Language Arts/Reading we will concentrate our focus on improving writing and reading skills. Students will learn and apply various reading strategies to make sense of a variety of print and non-print texts. Also, students will read a variety of literary genres, including, short stories, poems, novels, and non-fiction. Upon reading these materials, students will complete different exercises such as comprehension tests, Acclerated Reader tests, and open responses. Students will also use the writing process and criteria for effective writing in order to compile a collection of writings for a variety of purposes and audiences. On-demand writing will be a focus for us this year. Effective speaking skills, research tools, and emerging technology will be used to communicate ideas and information for a variety of authentic purposes, situations, and audiences.
