I am very excited about the 2009-2010 school year. It will be a pleasure to work with the group of boys and girls in my class this year. I am very proud to be a Burnside General, and a first grade teacher. I will do whatever is in my power to make this year a success for my students.
Reading
Our reading program incorporates many different components. Students will be participating in whole group instruction, small group instruction (tailored to their needs), centers, and Breakthrough to Literacy on the computer each day. Science and Social Studies are incorporated in our Reading instruction. It is my hope that my students will develop a lifelong love of reading. Please read to them at home and encourage them to read. Words are all around us if you just look and point them out!
Math
Our math instruction will be very hands on and fun. Our lessons and activities engage students in games that are instruction based, and encourage the love of math. Students will also be using Success Maker Math daily on the computer to reinforce these skills we are developing in the classroom.
Spelling
Each Monday, the students will be given a spelling packet for the week. These words will be taught during the week, and this packet will provide review and practice of these words. Nightly practice of these words (using the packet) will help your child be successful on their Friday tests and with their spelling skills. Help your child with time management skills, and encourage them to do a little bit of spelling each night, rather than waiting until Thursday night! This is a good life lesson as well as a good study habit.
Science and Social Studies
Each week we will be exploring different ideas in our Science and Social Studies units. There will be a lot of hands-on experiments and explorations for both! We will become scientists and use the scientific process to help us draw conclusions. We will also learn more about the world that we live in, and those that lived here before us in our studies! It will be a fun but meaningful time of learning for us!
Our Rules:
1. Show self-control (hands, feet, voices)
2. Use good manners and have a positive attitude
3. Show respect for others
4. Listen and follow directions
5. Do your personal best
6. No tattling (unless someone is going to get hurt)
Helping Hands!
If you would like to donate any of the following items to our classroom, it would be greatly appreciated. Remember, it is completely voluntary.
tissues
glue
crayons
pencils
hand sanitizer
games for recess (indoor, outdoor)
sanitizing wipes
ziploc bags
markers
Drops for Your Bucket
We have a character education approach in our classroom that we call, "A Drop for Your Bucket"! The students will be introduced to the books, "Fill A Bucket" and "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud. Students will learn to have their buckets filled and how to fill other students buckets-so they see how special, valuable, and capable they are. For each act of kindness that is observed in the classroom, Mrs. Meece will make note, and students will add a warm fuzzy to their bucket. When their bucket is full, students will receive a special prize!
