Burnside Elementary School

Hi ! My name is Ashley Gates and I am a new 2nd grade teacher here at Burnside Elementary School. I previously worked at Judy's Child Care Center on W. Hwy 80 for 8 years. It was during this time that I discovered my love for working with children. Not long after, I started college courses pursuing a Teaching Degree. First, I attended Somerset Community College and then transferred to Eastern Kentucky University to finish my degree. While I was attending EKU, I also earned a certificate in working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This was a fascinating learning experience!

To tell a little about my classroom, let me begin with my boy/girl ratio! My classroom has 14 boys and 5 girls! Poor girls. Yes, we have a lot of boys, but they make it fun! We are busy practicing our reading fluency, writing skills, math skills, and learning about things around us. Each week is a new adventure, with different reading stories to discover, new math skills to conquer, and BreakThrough to Literacy stories to explore. We stay focused on learning and having fun while we do it!

In my classroom, along with the entire school, we have many opportunities to use state of the art technology everyday! Each classroom is equipped with a Promethean Board which is a big screen on the wall that displays whatever is on the computer. So, this allows the students to see web sites, worksheets, PowerPoints, pictures, and even videos on a large screen. This makes it easy for everyone to see and interact with the web sites and activities presented. We are also equipped with Light Speed Technology. This is a microphone that is worn like a necklace around the teacher's neck and projects the voice through a speaker into the classroom. For students who are having hearing problems or even attention problems, this technology allows them to hear the teachers' voice consistently and clearly, no matter where she/he is in the room. Both of these pieces of technology are extremely helpful when working with children that have so many various learning and behavioral needs. Thanks Pulaski for giving us such wonderful technology.
