Burnside Elementary School

My name is Angela Evans. This is my fourth year of teaching first grade at Burnside Elementary. This year I have an excellent group of students that are eager to learn. We do many exciting things in our classroom everyday. We spend 3 hours every morning on language arts instruction. We implement Reading First in our classroom, which allows us to participate in whole group instruction, small group instruction, and literacy centers everyday. We also implement Breakthrough to Literacy in our classroom. Every student gets at least 15 minutes of individualized instruction on the computer everyday with this excellent literacy program. We also do many fun activities with our Breakthrough to Literacy Featured Book each week. We are also able to intergrate many important science and social studies concepts through this program. We also have a wonderful math program at our school, Everyday Math. It s a hands-on approach to teaching math which allows us to learn many important mathematical skills. We also have a math program on the computer called Success Maker. This is an individualized program that every child uses daily. It provides reinformcent for essential mathematical skills. The students really enjoy this program and we are already seeing exciting results! The students are making progress daily, and I am very excited about watching this group of students grow and learn in many ways this year!
