Welcome!

Peer Tutoring Syllabus
www.kypeertutoring.org

Daily Participation Grade= 50%
Peer tutoring is not a class where the work can be made up or done outside of class. This is a class where your attendance and attitude determine the outcomes of the students with disabilities. Since almost all of your work is done in class with the students, then most of your grade will be on that daily work.
The grade is awarded daily as follows:
1 points for not in class
2 point for in class but working on homework from
another class without teacher permission
3 points for in class and working with student with an unsatisfactory attitude
4 points for in class and working with student with a
satisfactory attitude
5 points for in class and working with student with an
excellent attitude
Assignments = 25%
For peer tutoring, the assignments will be provided through the KY Peer Tutoring Website. If you do not have access to a computer your assignments will be provided to you as hard copies. There are a total of 4 to 6 units you must complete. You will be given 2 to 3 weeks to complete each unit so that each peer tutor will be able to work at his or her own pace in the modules and activities. To move on to a new unit you must receive approval from your peer tutoring teacher.

Culminating/ Final Activity =15%
After the units are completed each peer tutor will be expected to complete a culminating activity. You will need to get approval from your peer tutoring teacher. Once we have decided upon that culminating activity, we will develop a grading rubric. All culminating activities must be turned in 1 week before exams begin.
** Develop a written report on a specific disability.
** Develop a short review of 5 different disabilities.
** Explore 5 different jobs in which you could work with people with disabilities.
** Visit and review 5 different community agencies that assist people with disabilities. The agencies need to be decided upon by the teacher and the student.
** Take 2 social or recreational leisure skill that you do everyday and make adaptations or modifications for a specific student to participate.
** Take a look at your job or place of employment and do a written report of modifications or adaptations that could be made so that a specific student could work there.
** Do a report on the history of institutions and people with disabilities.
** Select a 3-5 assistive technology devices and write a review on each one.
** Select a specific physical disability and do research on the different assistive technology devices that are available to help persons who might have that disability.
** Select a lesson from one of your regular education classes and complete a write-up on the modifications or adaptations that could be used to allow a student in our program to participate in that lesson successfully.

Journal Entries = 10%
Each peer tutor will be responsible for keeping a running journal.
You will be asked to write an entry every Friday and turn the
journal in no later than Monday at the beginning of class. When you turn in your journal you must turn in the entire journal, no single sheets of paper. If you wish write in your journal more often that is fine. The purpose of the journal is for the peer tutor to be able to express feelings of joy or even frustration, and to have the opportunity to ask questions. The journal also allows me to keep up with your progress as a peer tutor. Each journal will be scored 1-5 points. The points will be rewarded depending on the effort and thought you put into your journal.

Miscellaneous
There are several things you will have to keep up with for the peer tutoring class. My recommendation is that you have a peer tutoring notebook/binder to keep everything organized. In the binder you could separate the sections for journals, handouts, and assignments. If you need help with organizing your notebook/binder just ask your peer tutoring teacher for help and we will be glad to assist you.

If you miss a lot of school your daily grade will be low. You will
Have a chance to make up the missed points. Each time that you hang out with one of the students with a disability, you can earn 5 daily points. If you can document email correspondence with a student with a disability, then you can also earn 5 daily points. Soon you may find that you want to hang out with the students even though you do not need the points. Please see me for further information.
