I am the Gifted and Talented specialist at Southern Middle. My responsiblity for our school and district is to provide for the development, implementation, and monitoring of an equitable and appropriate Gifted Student Services Plan (GSSP) for each identified student at Southern Middle School, and to ensure that each student is provided the opportunity for continuous progress.
The areas in which our Gifted Students receive services through differentiation are Specific Academic, General Intellectual Aptitude, Leadership or Psychosocial skills, Creative or Divergent Thinking, and Visual and Performing Arts.
One very exciting service provided for our students identified in Visual and Performing Arts, Creative or Divergent Thinking, and/or Leadership is our Exploring Gifts and Talents (EGAT) Day. These students attend EGAT one time each semester and these are special events planned to complement the curriculum in Pulaski County Schools. There are feature presentations by community leaders, performances by local and professional artists, and hands-on activities for enrichment.
We are especially excited this year to offer our identified youth leaders and identified general intellectual students an unique opportunity to participate in the inaugural year of the Pulaski Youth Leadership Team. This selected team of youth leaders will be exposed to a broad view of civic leadership through direct contact with a variety of organizations and people that empower Pulaski County, kentucky, and our nation.
Twenty two students from Southern Middle were selected to the 2007-2008 PYL team.
